Yoga for People Who Ride Horses
Yoga for Equestrians will help you to develop physical and mental flexibility and strength that will enhance your riding. Yoga exercises done on the ground are followed by stretching exercises on the horse. The poses are suitable for beginners and people of all ages.

The format:

The instructor will lead the human students through 45 minutes of exercises on the ground. Then, half of the students will get their horses and mount up; the other half will assist by holding the horses' reins while the mounted riders are led through 30 minutes of yoga stretches and breathing exercises on horseback. The assistants will then mount their own horses and the other half of the group will assist them by holding the horses' reins. The exercises are safe and not strenuous.

You may wear your regular riding clothes, provided they allow you to move freely. Paddock or other short boots are easier to work in than tall boots.

The Instructor:

Diane Kennedy has been riding for nearly 20 years, and has competed successfully in Equestrian Dressage. She has been practicing yoga for five years, and is co-owner of Yoga Mandali in Saratoga Springs. She also teaches at Heartspace Holistic yoga center in Albany. Sge began to notice that her yoga practice could beadapted to her work with her Thorougbred horse, Nick, and that it caused a dramatic improvement in her riding, and brought them closer in the years before his death at age 20. She then began working with Tucker, a 15-year-old Thoroughbred with many old injuries and physical and mental issues, and found that yoga also helped enhance their relationship. Working with Barn Manager Sandy Atchinson and the other riders at White Birch, she developed a program to bring the benefits of yoga to people and their horses.

The Location:

White Birch is located off Blanchard Road in Wilton, about nine miles from Saratoga Springs. From downtown Saratoga, take Route 9 toward Mt. McGregor. When you see Chez Pierre on your left, Blanchard Road is the next right. White Birch is on the right seven-tenths of a mile in.
