Class Descriptions
Vinyasa Flow: Vinyasa is a Sanskrit word -nyasa means "to place" and vi- means "in a special way." A derivative of Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga is a flowing, natural sequence of asanas (postures) connecting each movement with unifying breath, bringing balance between ease (sukha) and effort (sthira). The sequences of the yoga postures are both physically challenging and spiritually rejuvenating. Classes can be vigorous or meditative depending on the teacher.
Ashtanga: This practice comes from the teachings of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India who learned the method from his teacher Krishnamacharya. Ashtanga means “eight-limbed yoga” and refers to the eightfold path outlined by the sage Patanjali. This Primary Series class consists of a set series of poses linked by vinyasa and synchronized with the breath to produce intense internal heat and purifying sweat. Classes are vigorous and challenging.
Alignment Focused Vinyasa Flow: Teaching awareness through attention to anatomical precision and alignment in the postures based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar. “Yoga has to be done with the intellect of the head as well as the intellect of the heart.” Detailed instruction is given, and poses are held longer, encouraging an opening in the body and the mind through deeper concentration and focus.
Gentle Yoga Flow: Slow flow postures and stretches designed to increase flexibility and joint function. More time will be given to meditation, restorative poses and savasana than in other classes allowing for a sense of deep relaxation and rejuvenation. This class is a great class for beginners.
